Fees
You may receive an account for anaesthesia services which is separate from the fees for the surgery and the hospital admission.
The fee for anaesthetic services is based on recommendations (but less than) those suggested by the Australian Medical Association.
Fees are determined by the complexity of the surgical procedure, the complexity of the anaesthesia, the patient’s age and underlying health, whether the procedure is an emergency, and the duration. These factors are used to calculate the number of “units” that are attributed to the anaesthetic service. The fee is calculated by the number of units. Because of these factors, it is difficult to provide an exact estimate of costs in advance. If it is anticipated that you will incur out of pocket expenses, an estimate of these costs will be sent to you before the procedure.
Patients with private health insurance undergoing endoscopy procedures will have no out of pocket expenses.
The Medicare schedule fee is currently $21.70 per unit, with charges above this requiring out of pocket expenses. Part of this cost may be covered by private health insurance depending on your level of cover.
The Australian Medical Association recommends a fee of $96.00 per unit. Dr Ironfield’s fees are substantially less than this.
